DSL Supervision in UK Schools: Why Every Safeguarding Lead Needs It
Safeguarding is one of the most crucial - and emotionally demanding - roles in schools. Yet Designated Safeguarding Leads (DSLs) often operate in isolation, managing high-stakes decisions while holding the emotional weight of trauma, disclosures, and risk.
Since the pandemic, this burden has only intensified. That’s why DSL supervision is no longer optional - it’s essential.
What Is DSL Supervision?
DSL supervision is a structured, confidential space that allows safeguarding professionals to:
Reflect on complex decisions
Discuss challenging cases
Maintain emotional boundaries
Strengthen professional judgement
It is not just about compliance. It is about care - for the DSLs themselves.
Why DSL Supervision Matters
Protects wellbeing
Exposure to trauma can cause secondary stress. Supervision provides a release valve before burnout takes hold.
Supports decision-making
DSLs must often make quick, high-risk choices. Supervision provides space for ethical reflection and clearer thinking.
Improves safeguarding outcomes
When safeguarding professionals feel resourced and supported, they can act with confidence, clarity, and consistency.
What Happens in a Session?
At Courage Over Comfort Coaching, a DSL supervision UK session might include:
• A check-in on personal and professional wellbeing
• Reflection on safeguarding cases or dilemmas
• Exploration of team dynamics, emotional strain, and role boundaries
• Coaching tools to build resilience and confidence
Sessions are available 1:1 or in group format, and can be delivered online or in person.
